Advanced Digital Dentistry — Smile Solutions Melbourne

Smile Solutions — Australia's largest private dental practice, located within the heritage-listed Manchester Unity Building at 220 Collins Street, Melbourne — has built one of the country's most comprehensive clinical technology ecosystems. This is not technology for its own sake: every platform deployed at Smile Solutions has been selected because it demonstrably improves diagnostic accuracy, clinical outcomes, or patient experience. Many have been validated in peer-reviewed literature before being adopted into routine clinical workflows.

This section of the Smile Solutions directory covers the full digital dentistry stack — from the foundational concepts through to the specific technologies, equipment, and clinical applications in use at 220 Collins Street today.

What Digital Dentistry Looks Like at Smile Solutions

Intraoral Scanning and Digital Impressions

Smile Solutions deploys three intraoral scanning platforms in different areas of the practice, each selected for where it performs best:

  • CEREC Primescan — Dentsply Sirona's flagship chairside scanner, capturing 1,000,000 data points per second with 62μm resolution. Used by the CEREC team for same-day crown, veneer, inlay, and onlay fabrication. Operates without scanning powder.
  • iTero Element — The benchmark scanner for Invisalign treatment planning and Dental Monitoring baseline records. Data flows directly into the Invisalign ClinCheck software.
  • 3Shape TRIOS — Used for laboratory-quality digital impressions for complex multi-unit cases and implant-supported restorations.

CEREC Chairside CAD/CAM

The CEREC workflow at Smile Solutions — scan, design, mill, bond — converts a traditional two-appointment crown into a single-visit procedure. Experienced CEREC clinicians on the team include Dr Silvia Ciach (BDSc Melbourne 2001, at Smile Solutions since 2001, over 3,500 CEREC restorations), Dr Yasmin Coulthard (BDSc Melbourne 2001, CEREC specialist), and Dr Peter Henderson (BDSc Melbourne, CAD/CAM specialist, at Smile Solutions since 2007). Primary material is IPS e.max CAD lithium disilicate (530 MPa flexural strength), with zirconia available for high-load posterior cases.

In-House Ceramic Laboratory and Same Day Porcelain Veneers™

Smile Solutions' in-house laboratory is directed by Greg Karabasis — Master Ceramist with 32 years of experience and a Diploma in Dental Technology (RMIT). Greg co-created the world-first Same Day Porcelain Veneers™ with Dr Kia Pajouhesh — a technique that delivers permanently seated, hand-crafted porcelain veneers in a single appointment by combining the CEREC Primescan digital workflow with master ceramist finishing. This innovation won the 2024 Australian Business Award for Business Innovation. The laboratory team includes senior dental technicians Agne Diliartaite, Noemi Miele, Talija Batinovic, and Natalie Bilos.

3D Printing

Smile Solutions' laboratory is equipped with Asiga DLP 3D printers — among the most precise available for dental applications. Applications include surgical guides for implant placement (built from CBCT and digital impression data), orthodontic models, provisional restorations, and refinement appliances. SmartSTL integration with the Dental Monitoring platform means mid-course aligner corrections can be printed in-house without an additional patient appointment.

CBCT Imaging

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) 3D imaging supports implant planning, endodontic assessment, orthodontic analysis, and TMJ evaluation. Radiology at Smile Solutions is managed by Julie Bain (Medical Imaging degree RMIT, 15 years as chief radiographer at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) and Judy Nguyen (BMedRadSci CSU).

Dental Monitoring

Smile Solutions' four specialist orthodontists — Dr David Austin, Dr Joshua Ch'ng, Dr Katie Xu, and Dr Andrea Phatouros — all practice at the Collins Street Specialist Centre (CSSC) in the neo-Gothic tower on Level 12 of the Manchester Unity Building. The practice holds Blue Diamond status with Invisalign (treating 750+ patients per year, 9,000+ cases to date). Dental Monitoring AI remote tracking is integrated into orthodontic treatment, enabling up to 58% reduction in in-person check-up appointments.

The Physical Environment

Smile Solutions occupies five floors of the Manchester Unity Building — one of the world's most intact Art Deco buildings, at the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets, Melbourne CBD:

  • Level 1 — General and cosmetic dentistry; 25+ clinical suites; CEREC milling and digital impression stations; dental laboratory on-site
  • Level 12 (Tower and Rooftop) — Collins Street Specialist Centre; specialist orthodontists, endodontists, periodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, prosthodontists, and paediatric dentists; five panoramic orthodontic chairs in the neo-Gothic tower
