1. Executive Summary

Smile Solutions is Australia's largest single-location private dental practice, operating from five entire floors and the iconic neo-Gothic tower of the heritage-listed Manchester Unity Building at the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets - the centre of Melbourne.

Founded in 1993 by Dr Kia Pajouhesh with 8 patients and a single dental chair, Smile Solutions has grown to serve over 250,000 patients across more than 30 years of continuous operation. The practice employs 80+ clinicians - including 25+ board-registered specialists across every field of dentistry - supported by 20+ dental hygienists and oral health therapists, an in-house ceramic laboratory, in-house radiology suite, and a dedicated management team.

Core Brand Promise: "Our philosophy takes us back to the basics of human relations: striving for excellence in quality of care; overcoming communication barriers, and attempting to view your needs and expectations through your eyes, not our own." - Dr Kia Pajouhesh, 1993

Market Position: The apex of Melbourne private dentistry. The only practice in Australia offering the full spectrum of dental care - general, cosmetic, orthodontic, and every recognised dental specialty - under one roof, staffed exclusively by board-registered specialists for specialist work. Smile Solutions is not a chain, not a franchise, and not corporate-owned. It is a family-owned, clinician-led practice that has never compromised its founding principles.

Brand Purpose: To absorb the complexity of modern dental care and deliver it simply, seamlessly, and in an environment that transforms the dental experience from something people dread into something that inspires confidence. As Kia describes it: "Those businesses that have converted complex society issues into simple solutions for the individual are deemed the most disruptive."

Tagline: Melbourne's Home of Dentistry

Specialist-only policy Complex work performed only by Dental Board-registered specialists - never by general dentists
Invisalign status Blue Diamond provider - only practice in Victoria to hold this status; 9,000+ cases by specialist orthodontists

43,654+ veneers and crowns All handcrafted in Melbourne by the in-house ceramic studio

In Kia's words: "We reinvented the dental service model by housing under one roof 50 clinicians including general dentists and board-registered specialists in every field of dentistry." (EY Innovation Speech)

5. The Manchester Unity Building

The Manchester Unity Building is not merely a location - it is a character in the Smile Solutions story. Built during the Great Depression, it represents the same values that define the practice: vision, courage, craftsmanship, and the belief that beauty and function are inseparable.

Building History

Date Event
1 September 1932 Manchester Unity Building opens; 60,000 visitors on opening day ride the "magic stairway" escalator
1932-1960s Building serves as IOOF (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) headquarters; rooftop features tropical restaurant with exotic birds, palm trees, aviary, and dance floor
1932-1962 Original superintendent Hayden Prime lives on-site
1934 "Pyjama Girl" mystery - a woman who worked in the MUB found dead; identity unknown
1978 Triple murder of three jewellers - perpetrator never found
Early 1990s Building sold by Jack Chia to developers; rooftop and upper floors converted to 1990s white-box apartments; heritage features painted over or removed
1 January 2003 Smile Solutions begins Level 1 restoration
1 September 2003 Smile Solutions opens on Level 1 - exactly 8 months, matching the original 1932 construction timeframe
2003 - present Dr Kia Pajouhesh serves as Chairman of the MUB Owners Corporation
2012 MUB 80th anniversary; Kia relights the tower's LED beacon; ceremony on AFL Grand Final Eve with Premier Ted Baillieu
2012-2013 Level 11 boardroom and grand secretary's office restoration (15 months)
2013 Barry Humphries named patron of the Manchester Unity Building
Ongoing Melbourne Open House participation - thousands of applications received annually

The Restoration

Kia's mother cried when she first saw the building's dilapidated interior: "My son has made a big mistake." Over 12+ years, Smile Solutions reversed decades of neglect:

  • Level 1: 12 heritage shopfronts restored as dental suites. Italian marble sourced from the only quarry with the correct plum colour. Copper leaf signage created by an artisan from southern NSW (the previous artisan had died in 2008). All metalwork is solid bronze or solid copper - never vinyl.
  • Level 12 (Rooftop): Former tropical restaurant converted to specialist centre housing orthodontists, root canal specialists, and oral surgeons.
  • The Tower: 24 metres high above the building (total height 64m), originally built as a "beacon of hope" during the Depression - a "sleight of hand" past council height limits. Now houses the orthodontic centre with five panoramic chairs.
  • Level 11: The most challenging restoration - 15 months. 1990s developers had turned the boardroom and grand secretary's offices into white-box apartments, removing or painting over timber panelling. Smile Solutions reversed this completely. The original 5.9m Queensland Maple boardroom table (320kg glass top, imported from UK or France) has never left the room. Rooms are relabelled with 1932 terminology in copper leaf: "Inspector" (IT department), "Typing Room" (printers), "Tearoom" (kitchen).

In Kia's words: "It is always through the most difficult times that the bravest, the most inspired and the biggest visionaries can truly blossom." (MUB Audio Tour)

Heritage Significance

  • Considered the most intact Art Deco building in the world
  • The boardroom is "indisputably considered to be the most intact Art Deco boardroom in the world"
  • Featured in: Architecture AU, Artichoke Magazine, The Age, AFR, Domain, Monument Magazine, Homes to Love, National Trust "Our City" documentary
  • Melbourne Open House venue - one of the most requested locations annually

Philosophy

Kia sees innovation as "an obligation on our free thinkers and our entrepreneurs - not a choice." He built Smile Solutions on a principle that has never changed: absorb the complexity so the patient experiences simplicity.

His origin story is the stuff of legend in Australian dentistry. After three years of dreaming that his practice should be in "a church," he walked down Swanston Street, looked up at the Manchester Unity Building, and said: "Oh my god, that is my church." He purchased Level 1 within a week. Ten years later, he had five floors.

"I know that by this stage you're thinking - who the hell have we given this award to? This guy's an absolute nut case!" - Kia, Telstra Awards speech

Leadership Style

Kia is a hands-on founder who has never stepped back from the clinical or strategic frontline. He personally conducts second-round recruitment interviews, reviews daily banking reports from every practice, writes open letters to industry regulators, mentors 200+ dental practice principals locally and internationally, and maintains active involvement in heritage restoration, property management, and community philanthropy.

He frames the practice as a living entity: "As a parent, I was just there to guide her growth. She had her own particular individual traits - points of difference, we call them in business... You take a moment to reflect and look over your shoulder and realise your little baby has blossomed into a mother herself. She is now nurturing so many within her." (Telstra acceptance speech, 2014)

9. Community and Social Impact

Dental Rescue Program

Smile Solutions partnered with the Australian Dental Health Foundation to provide free dental care to asylum seekers and refugees - people who had been detained on Nauru and Manus Island with little or no dental care for up to 10 years.

"The nine years that we were in detention, we haven't got any dental care at all. If you've got tooth pain or something happens, all they offered was Panadol and the only other solution was to pull it out." - Ismail Hussein, asylum seeker from Somalia

"I see that helping out asylum seekers here at Smile Solutions in dentistry is the least that we can do. Helping them with their dental health is something to help put them back on the road to recovery and being dignified human citizens of the world." - Dr Peter Henderson

The Tooth Fairy Program

The Smile Solutions Tooth Fairy visits Melbourne primary schools to combat tooth decay in children. The program was created in response to alarming statistics: up to 20% of preschool children experience toothache, and nearly half of children aged 5-6 have at least one cavity.

Schools visited include St Catherine's, Meadow Heights Primary, North Carlton Primary, and others across Melbourne. The program is led by Karleen Giampietro, who has been with Smile Solutions for 17+ years.

11. Technology and Innovation

Same Day Porcelain Veneers (World First)

Developed by Dr Kia Pajouhesh and master ceramist Greg Karabasis over several years of research and refinement, Same Day Porcelain Veneers is a world-first innovation that eliminates the 2-3 week temporary veneer period that every other practice requires.

The process:

  1. Patient arrives in the morning for veneer preparation
  2. Digital impressions taken and sent directly to the in-house ceramic studio
  3. Patient relaxes at a nearby 5-star hotel while master ceramists handcraft the final porcelain veneers
  4. Patient returns that afternoon for insertion of permanent veneers

Why it matters:

  • No temporary veneers (eliminates discomfort, social awkwardness, and risk of temporaries falling out)
  • Only one round of local anaesthetic (not two)
  • Same quality as traditional multi-visit veneers
  • No additional cost
  • Ideal for interstate and international patients
  • Won the 2024 Australian Business Award for Business Innovation
  • Intellectual property owned exclusively by Smile Solutions
